Summary: I’m from Lake City, and my entire family still lives there, so we were looking for a place to stay during the holidays where we could bring our dogs along and not have to board them. This has been the perfect fit for what we need. We’ve stayed here twice now—once for Thanksgiving and once for Christmas—and both stays have been great. We love the self check-in, which lets us head straight to see family without worrying about timing our arrival. The rooms are super clean and comfortable, and with the dogs, it’s especially nice to be able to open the door and have grass just a few steps away. The only downside we noticed was during our Thanksgiving stay, when there were guests in the room next to us and we could hear quite a bit of noise. That said, overall this is a great place at a great value, and we definitely plan to stay here again.

Summary: Sunset Motel – Lake City, MN The Sunset Motel has potential, but it’s definitely a work in progress. The room was tiny, with furnishings to match. The retro-style chairs looked cool, but sitting in them felt like an act of faith — I was half afraid they’d give out mid-sit. Cleanliness was mostly okay, except for a few long black hairs (we’re gray and blond, so definitely not ours). The door, however, has seen better days — more chipped than my Aunt Zelda’s manicure after a week at the casino. With a little attention to detail and a touch of TLC, this place could shine like its name suggests. For now, it’s more of a twilight than a sunset experience.
